Eko Hot Blog reports that HRM Oba Abdul Lateef Atanda Abiodun Adams, Akinwunmi 1, the Onikate of Ikate Kingdom, has expressed his motivation behind conferring chieftaincy titles.

He gave the explanation on Thursday, December 14, 2023, during the chieftaincy conferment of Chief Bisi Onilogbo and his wife, Chief Mrs Oluwakemi Onilogbo as the Aare and Yeye Aare of Ikate Kingdom respectively.

The conferment ceremony was held at the monarch’s palace amidst the presence of other esteemed royal fathers such Oba Fatai Oyeyinka Aromire, Oba Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, Oba Owolabi Adeshina Adeniyi, and other dignitaries.

In an interview with Eko Hot Blog, Oba Adams noted that he was never in a rush to make chiefs and wouldn’t consider those with affluence without impact in the community.

The monarch also disclosed what he saw in Chief Onilogbo and his wife that made him confer them with the chieftaincy titles.

“It was after a year of becoming king that I conferred chieftaincy titles on two individuals, ‘Iya Oba’ and ‘Baba Oba,’ who are respectable people. For me, I don’t want to do things in a way that won’t bring fulfillment to me,” he said.

“I don’t want to make people chiefs simply because they’re wealthy. If you’re not capable or able to make an impact in the community, I don’t need you.

“What I observed in Chief Bisi Onilogbo is that he’s incredibly humble and does the right things even without being told. He requested this title, and I saw that he deserves it alongside his wife. That’s why I conferred it on him. I don’t need to look elsewhere when I have him. He’s a genuinely nice person.”

Oba Adams further expressed gratitude to God for making him the first king in Surulere, hoping to bring more prosperity to the kingdom.

He also disclosed the work going on presently in the kingdom which he’s spearheading.

“I want to thank God because I’m the first king in this Surulere local government; it has never happened before. All other 19 local governments have their kings except for Surulere for ages, and I am the first king in Surulere,” the monarch stated.

“I didn’t beg for the crown but was called to become the king. And I’ll prosper and stay long on the throne. I’m vigorously doing what I ought to do as a king, and I pray God helps me even more.

“You can go around and ask; you will be told about the great deeds I have done and the ones I’m doing and intending to do. If you look closely, you’ll see some sanitations going on; I’m the one heading it. It’s not a small task; the areas to cover are wide.”

Meanwhile, Oba Adams spoke about his upcoming birthday celebration, while appreciating his wife for standing by him through thin and thick, of which she’s currently benefiting.

“I’m very happy; I’ll be 70 soon. I have spent more than 7 years on the throne, and God willing, I’ll reign for many more years. I thank God I’m blessed with children and a wonderful wife. She accepted me the way I was back then, and now she’s enjoying it,” he said.

The traditional ruler sent a clear message to his subjects, telling them why he took certain decisions and his intention for the kingdom.

“My message to my community, which I want to be on record, is that I don’t have family chiefs. If one dabbles into it without care, what might happen could be beyond one’s control,” Oba Adams explained.

“So, I’m taking my time to know those capable of the job. I can’t be a king and not go out with somebody reliable and highly respectable. Also, to my subjects, good things are still coming. I’ll try my utmost best to ensure that Ikate Kingdom is rewarded with good things so that when I leave, I’ll be remembered.”
