Why The Indian Football Team Withdrew From FIFA World Cup

  • The team have never played in the world cup, though they qualified in 1950.
  • They have no entries in the tournament from 1950 onwards.

India have never won the final of the Asian championship but managed the best ever finish by making it to the final in 1964 AFC.

In 1950, india managed to qualifiy for Fifa world cup which was scheduled to take place in Brazil, where they were drawn with sweden, Italy and Paraguay.

India withdrew from the world cup finals before the tournament begun. The Indian football team gave various reasons for the teams withdrawal including travel costs, lack of practising time and valuing the olimpics above the world cup.

Despite the AIFF reasons, many football historians and bandits have repeated the tale that india withdrew from world cup due to FIFA imposing rules banning players from playing.

However, the India football team’s captain Sailen Manna,  said the history of the team not being allowed to play barefoot may be a factor.

In 1966, Asian games, India participated in the 1970 Asian games where they came back and took third position during the tournament. The team defeated Japan 1-0 during the bronze medal match.
