EKO HOT BLOG notes that NIS cited four primary reasons for the fee hike, which has generated varied responses on social media.
According to the service, the increased fees will contribute to several key areas: enhancing passport quality, addressing rising production costs, improving service delivery, and supporting the government’s local content policy.
The NIS stated that the revised fees will help ensure that Nigerian passports continue to meet the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. Additionally, the adjustment reflects the growing costs of materials and production, which have been driven by current economic conditions.
The fee increase is also aimed at expanding the NIS’s network of passport front offices and biometric centers nationwide. This expansion is expected to improve access to passport services, alleviate congestion at existing centers, and accelerate passport processing times.
The adjustment aligns with the NIS’s broader objective to fully domesticate passport booklet production, ensuring that the entire manufacturing process occurs within Nigeria.
To streamline the application process, the NIS has encouraged applicants to use the automated payment platform available on its official website.
