Speaking at his post-match press conference, Klopp acknowledged that his team’s failure to convert the penalty and create enough chances in the second half contributed to their defeat. He also praised Bournemouth for fighting hard and demonstrating their quality by keeping possession away from Liverpool players.
“I thought we started OK in the second half, were a bit clearer in our situations, get a penalty, miss the penalty. Now it’s of course, hypothetical – it looked a little bit for me like if we score there, it doesn’t make the game better from the first half, but it would give us a proper boost,” Klopp said.
“But we did not score from that and then you could see we were a bit in a rush, did not create enough, in counter-attacking moments Bournemouth fought massively, with really big passion, won these balls and then the Bournemouth boys showed really their quality, how they kept the ball.”
Liverpool’s defeat came as a major surprise, with Bournemouth struggling for form in the Premier League this season.
Klopp’s attention will now turn to Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday, where they will aim to overturn a 2-5 deficit from the first leg at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.
The German manager will be hoping for a much-improved performance from his team to keep their European campaign alive.
