EKO HOT BLOG reports that the aggrieved Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), popularly known as G5 Governors, are set to return to Nigeria on Friday.
A source familiar with happenings around them gave the information, saying barring any last-minute change, the Governors are expected back in the country tomorrow.
The source added that upon return to the country, the Governors would address the press.
The G5 Governors had been in London, United Kingdom, to hold strategic meetings on the presidential candidate they would support for 2023.
This follows their disagreement with the PDP and their subsequent stand not to support the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, except Iyorchia Ayu steps down as the PDP National Chairman and is replaced by a southerner.
They are reported to be considering throwing their weight behind either the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi, or the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer, Bola Tinubu.
As Nigerians eagerly wait for the Governors and the outcome of their London meeting, the source quoted by Vanguard said on Thursday that the G5 Governors also visited former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who is in custody in the UK over alleged organ harvesting charges.
Speaking on their expected return, the source said, “They’ll be returning to the country tomorrow if everything goes according to plan. Just be patient.
“In fact, they’ll be addressing the media as is customary. All they are doing is not for personal aggrandizement, they are concerned about the future of this country they all love so much, this project is bigger than any political party it is about Nigeria’s unity and the future of our children yet unborn.“
The source added that the Governors are not in any way bothered by threats of sanction over anti-party activities coming from some quarters.
The source claimed the G5 Governors are not fighting any personal battle but are out to ensure fairness, equity, and justice.
Asked if there was apprehension within the G-5 over threats of sanctions by the party hierarchy, the source said, “Not at all.
“The truth is that some persons who do not want peace to return are the ones using proxies to issue threats, the G-5 governors are unfazed because the task ahead is the battle for the soul of our country it is not about their personal comfort or political future.
“Governor Wike for example is not contesting for any election, the other governors who are contesting for one position or another can hold their own anytime, any day.”
