Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has asserted that the difficulties faced by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara are far from over, hinting at more challenges on the horizon, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking at a reception in Abalama, a Kalabari community, Wike expressed his views on the ongoing political tensions in the state.
The event was held amidst concerns over potential unrest due to alleged anti-Ijaw remarks made by Wike in Abuja, which the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) threatened to disrupt.
This backdrop of heightened tensions highlights the uncertain political climate in Rivers State.
Since the Supreme Court’s ruling on the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the nullification of local government elections, political instability has escalated within the state.
The Assembly, led by Martins Ameawhule, has threatened to impeach Governor Fubara over the 2025 budget and thwarted his efforts to present it.
On Saturday, Wike renewed the crisis in Abalama, telling Fubara, “You’re already down, 2-0. But more are still coming” in front of a cheering crowd.
Wike sought to clarify his previous statement regarding the Ijaw people, emphasizing that it was not meant as a slight but rather a call for collaboration among various ethnic groups in the Niger Delta region.
Wike’s remarks came in response to criticism and tension surrounding his comments, which had led to concerns over potential unrest.
According to sources, IYC had planned an event on the same day as Wike’s reception, prompting the traditional ruler of Abalama to appeal to the organizers of both events to cancel in order to maintain peace in the state.
While the IYC event was canceled, Wike’s reception went ahead as planned, with some Kalabari chiefs reportedly defying the king’s orders by attending.
