Former Publicity Secretary of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Anabs Sara-Igbe, has attributed the political crisis in Rivers State to Nyesom Wike’s alleged desire to control the state’s resources.

Speaking during an interview with News Central on Friday, Sara-Igbe claimed that Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sought to dominate the state’s finances despite Governor Siminalayi Fubara being in charge.

He further alleged that Wike’s ambition for the presidency influenced his actions.

“The crisis in Rivers State is not about political structure; it’s about money—who controls the money in Rivers State. That’s the structure Wike is referring to,” he said.

“Wike is nursing a presidential ambition and believes money is essential to secure the ticket. He is trying to control all resources, both in Rivers State and in his current office. Unfortunately, he went about it the wrong way, using force, and that’s where the conflict stems from.”

Sara-Igbe also alleged that Wike handpicked all commissioners, special advisers, and the chief of staff in Governor Fubara’s administration. He claimed the former governor awarded contracts that would consume the state’s federal allocations before leaving office and controlled the state’s internally generated revenue until Governor Fubara intervened.

“Wike undeniably played a role in the emergence of the governor, but he didn’t allow him to nominate even a single commissioner. All the appointments were Wike’s decisions,” Sara-Igbe said.

“Before leaving office, Wike awarded contracts that would deplete the state’s federal allocations and gave specific instructions about which banks should handle payments. He also controlled the internally generated revenue for months until Governor Fubara said no. That marked the beginning of the conflict,” he added.
