A woman has died after being bitten by a deadly pit viper while hanging out washing in her garden.

Marciele de Pinho Silva, 36, was nipped on foot by the snake as she pegged out clothes on the line at her home in Brazil.

Her husband killed it and took its body with him to the clinic.

An attending nurse said the patient was medicated with eight vials of antivenom serum specific for the species, according to a statement by the city council.

The patient was subsequently transferred to the Municipal Hospital of Cuiabá in Mato Grosso State, where she passed away the next day on May 4.

The nurse said: “Her condition worsened there in Cuiabá. We delivered the patient alive and walking.

“There is never a lack of snakebite serum because many accidents happen here with these venomous animals, mainly the pit viper species.

“At the beginning, eight ampoules of antivenom serum were administered.”

The council said in a statement: “The patient made the entire trip between the health units accompanied by the doctor, Dr Maria Carolina, and a nurse.

“The patient’s condition was stable. The patient was pain-free and talking.”

In the hospital, the victim started to suffer severe pain and went into cardiac arrest. She passed away in intensive care.

Her death certificate reportedly stated she died of ‘coagulopathy caused by snakebite’. Coagulopathy is a bleeding disorder.

Her family has asked if the serum she received at the local clinic was for the correct snake species.

As well as the eight vials of serum, the city council said the patient was medicated with promethazine, hydrocortisone, metamizole, and tramadol.

Rosa Blanco, the municipal secretary of health, confirmed that all the medication and protocols were carried out adequately.

The official called Marciele’s death “an isolated case”.

The authorities confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to establish all the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
