EKO HOT BLOG reports that Fatima Isa, a businesswoman, died during fibroid surgery at the Felobam Alpha Clinic in the Mafoluku neighbourhood of Oshodi, Lagos State, and her family has demanded justice.

The press gathered that the victim and her sister, Queen, left their hometown in Auchi, Edo State, and traveled down to the medical institution for the surgery.

Fatima was admitted to the hospital when the nuns arrived on Thursday, and Queen stayed the night.

Queen told our correspondent that the hospital management requested N190,000 for the surgery and that she had to leave her sister in their care to withdraw the money.

“The money was in my account, so I went to the bank and withdrew the money,” she explained, “but when I returned to the hospital about 1.35pm, they had already brought my sister to the theatre to execute the surgery despite the fact that she had not signed any forms.”

“After four hours of silence, I called one of the nurses to find out what was going on, but was told they were cleaning her up.” Around 5 p.m., the doctor left the hospital, and when I inquired about my sister, she said she was fine.

“My sister was brought out later.” My sister, on the other hand, was breathing unnaturally when I saw her. I promptly informed the doctor and nurses, and the doctor’s assistant arrived and began striking my sister in the laps.

“When my sister shook her head, the assistant doctor assumed she was fine. But as soon as he stepped out, she began to breathe heavily and then abruptly stopped breathing, and that was how she died.

I quick called Doctors and nurses, they asked me to get out as they rushed in, but I refused. I began yelling and weeping. Kate, one of my sisters, came around 8 p.m. after I called her. We both slept in the hospital room where Fatima’s body had been dumped.

“The physicians and nurses had simply abandoned us.” I contacted my sister in Asaba first thing in the morning, and she urged us to call our cousin, Momoh, in Lagos. We want the government to assist us in obtaining justice for my sister’s death. According to what we’ve heard, the person who operated on my sister wasn’t even a doctor.”

The doctor who conducted the procedure, according to Momoh, was a fraud.

She said, “Fatima’s last words while gasping for breath was ‘God have mercy on me.’ When Queen alerted the doctor as she was breathing abnormally, they gave her an injection, but she continued struggling to breathe and died.

When she called us, we rushed to the facility. I became angry because the whole place was worse than an abattoir. We asked the doctor what happened and he told me that after the surgery, she developed cardiac arrest and died.

“I asked the cause of the cardiac arrest, but the doctor was just speaking like an illiterate and could not even make a complete sentence, and he is running a hospital in Lagos State of all places.

“We asked for her file and they brought out a paper, but there was nothing in the file to indicate that a test was carried out before the surgery. We asked who performed the surgery and we were told one Lawrence, and that he works with LASUTH.

“We collected Lawrence’s phone number, but he didn’t pick his call. We later got to know that he is a nurse and not a doctor. We got the death certificate, which was signed by Lawrence, and reported at a police station in Mafoluku because we want justice.”
