Eko Hot Blog reports that France got off to a winning start on Tuesday night as they sought to defend the World Cup trophy they won in 2018.
They beat Australia 4-1 in a match that saw striker Olivier Giroud go level with the legendary Thierry Henry as France’s record all-time scorer.
Didier Deschamps’ men were initially shocked as Australia took the lead through Craig Goodwin in the 9th minute. A sweeping pass from Harry Souttar picks out Leckie and he finds Goodwin at the back post to tuck home.
But the French were not in the mood to allow the Australians to pull a Saudi Arabia on them. They responded some minutes later through Adrien Rabiot who headed home an equaliser from a Theo Hernandez cross.
Five minutes later, France completed the turnaround through Giroud. The Australian goalkeeper Ryan tried to play out from the back, but Rabiot stole the ball. He combined superbly with Mbappe on the left and he found Giroud for a simple tap-in.
Mbappe turned scorer in the 68th minute, planting a lovely header in the far corner after a great cross from the in-form Ousmane Dembele.
Three minutes later, Mbappe was a provider, helping Giroud to his goal number 51 for France and the country’s fourth goal of the evening.
The AC Milan striker is now on track to be the outright top goalscorer for France during the tournament in Qatar.
