World Cup: France Go Through To Semifinal After Beating England

France are through to the World Cup semifinal after beating England.

Eko Hot Blog reports that a physical match with a tense atmosphere in Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar ended in a 2-1 victory for defending World Cup champions France over rivals England.

In a tournament that’s featured all-world play from superstar Kylian Mbappe, it was France’s Olivier Giroud and Aurélien Tchouameni who found the back of the net for Les Bleus.

The English controlled the ball for a majority of the match and had plenty of opportunities: The Three Lions had 15 shots to France’s eight, and seven of the English attempts were on target.

But France had better luck in front of goal. Tchouaméni found the back of the net in the 17th minute to give France the lead.

It was the Real Madrid striker’s first World Cup goal and only his second in international play.

England levelled proceedings some minutes after the start of the second half. Bukayo Saka was fouled in the area to earn a spot kick in the 54th minute. Harry Kane sent his Tottenham teammate, Hugo Lloris, the wrong way from the penalty. The goal helped Kane equal England legend Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals for his country.

France’s Olivier Giroud had the final say on the scoreline, scoring a header to put his country back in the lead against rival England.

England captain Kane tried to make it his second score of the match via spot kick, but he could not get past Lloris the second time.

The French head to a semifinal against an underdog Morocco squad that has defied odds and made history with each round of the tournament. The Atlas Lions are the first African team to reach the semifinal of the World Cup. They will play against France on Wednesday.
