A former senator representing Imo East senatorial district, Eze Ajoku, has described the role of radio in Nigeria’s growing democracy as unquantifiable.
Ajoku made the remark while addressing newsmen in Owerri on Saturday as part of activities marking the 2021 World Radio Day.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Radio Day was decided by the United Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) during its 36th conference on Nov. 3, 2011 and is celebrated on Feb. 13 each year.

Ajoku, who is the Managing Director of Darling 107.3 FM Owerri, called on media actors in the field of broadcasting to embrace professionalism as a catalyst to democracy.
“Radio is constitutionally censored by the National Broadcasting Corporation, not any independent individual. Its role in an emerging democracy is unquantifiable.
“ I urge all radio stations to operate independently as the watchdog of the society for the greater good of our democracy “, he said.
He, however, outlined the merits of radio to include promotion of education, culture and the commercial life of businesses as well as employment generation and enlightenment.
He further described the radio as a source of companionship to older persons and lonely individuals adding that effective management of the media industry will reinforce the confidence of the world in Nigeria’s democracy.
“Radio has brought information sharing to planet earth.
“As a country, we must practice unbiased, independent journalism so as to reinforce the confidence of the international community in our democracy”, Ajoku said.
