EKO HOT BLOG reports that addressing journalists on Monday after the swearing-in of two new national commissioners by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Yakubu affirmed that he remains the legally recognised chairman of INEC and the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation.

“I don’t think we need to waste time on unnecessary speculations. As far as the law is concerned, and as far as I’m aware, I remain the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, and under the Constitution, the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation, and under the Electoral Act, the returning officer for the presidential election,” he said.

Speaking on upcoming electoral reforms, the INEC boss revealed that the commission has already submitted 147 recommendations to the National Assembly for consideration, aimed at strengthening the electoral process before the 2027 general elections.

Yakubu noted that eight of the proposals require either constitutional amendments or changes to the Electoral Act. He added that INEC has been engaging extensively with lawmakers, including a recent retreat held in Lagos with members of the National Assembly’s joint committee on electoral reform.

“So far, we are happy with our discussions and the speed with which the National Assembly wants to proceed with the amendments. This will help ensure we have the necessary reforms in place ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.

On the swearing-in of new INEC commissioners, Yakubu expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for filling long-standing vacancies, particularly for the North-West and South-East geopolitical zones.

“We now have almost the full complement of commissioners. Two weeks ago, we sadly lost one of our commissioners, Major General Modibbo Alkali (rtd), may his soul rest in peace. With today’s appointments, we are now better positioned to deliver on our mandate,” Yakubu stated.
