A fire outbreak on Tuesday 31st of December gutted the top floor of a three-story building at Number 2, Ido Oluwo, in Lagos Island’s bustling Docemo Market. The incident, which occurred on New Year’s Eve, caused extensive damage to properties but fortunately resulted in no casualties.

In a separate incident the same day, a 33,000-liter diesel tanker caught fire while discharging its content near a hotel adjoining the Okokomaiko Police Station on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Ojo. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, quickly contained both blazes, averting further damage to nearby buildings and structures.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Docemo Market fire started at approximately 8:45 a.m., wreaking havoc on the property. The market has previously experienced a similar fire earlier in the year, which destroyed goods worth millions of naira. Following that earlier incident, the market was temporarily sealed for structural integrity tests, and victims received financial aid from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The second fire incident occurred around 12:25 p.m. as the diesel tanker ignited during unloading. Quick action from firefighters at the Ojo and Ijegun-Egba Fire Stations ensured the safety of hotel occupants and nearby police personnel.

Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, attributed both incidents to negligence. She stated that the Docemo Market fire was caused by an electrical surge, while the tanker fire resulted from a safety lapse by the operator, who failed to allow adequate cooling before engaging the engine’s power take-off system.

“Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported. Both fires have been extinguished, and operations are now concluded,” Adeseye confirmed.
