Opening the session, Commissioner Nkechi Uzoegwu, Executive Director of YETI Global Foundation, stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of violence and youth restiveness in Mushin.
“There is too much violence, killings, and unrest in Mushin. We need to change the narrative. Community leaders, elders, and government stakeholders must come together, empower these young people, and get them positively engaged,” she said.
From California, Dr. Veronica Ufoegbune praised the initiative and called for a multi-dimensional approach to youth empowerment.
“This program will not only help youths in Mushin, but Nigeria as a whole. We must identify their talents, give them access to digital literacy, work with elders to support their development, form strong community structures, and funnel their creativity into nation-building,” she stated.
Chairman of Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye LCDA, Hon. Ajala Rasaq Olushola, addressed the underlying causes of violence in Mushin.
“Mushin is a reflection of what’s happening in the entire nation. The root causes of violence here include social and economic inequality, unemployment, territorial fights, trauma, and stress.
But Mushin is not as bad as people paint it, great minds have come from here and contributed meaningfully to Nigeria’s progress,” he said.
Youth advocate and convener, Miss Sola Asekun-Amusu, emphasized the need to shift perceptions about youth.
“Youths are not a problem to be solved. Mushin is full of energetic, creative, and brilliant young people. We need to retrain and engage them with humility, help them see that they are heard and seen.
Let’s create platforms that provide real job opportunities, encourage skill acquisition, and stop politicians from using them as tools of violence,” she urged.
Dr. Omobolanle Awero Adelakun brought attention to the foundational role of home and education in shaping future leaders.
“Charity begins at home. Education shouldn’t be the burden of teachers alone. We must also emphasize moral education and promote alternative learning paths like vocational and technical training. Not every child must follow the formal route skills matter too,” she said.
Hon. Emmanuel Bamigboye, the Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, applauded the initiative and emphasized mentorship.
“This conversation is timely. Mentorship and skill acquisition can transform a lot of lives here. Let’s support the youth with opportunities and guidance,” he stated.
He also mentioned some of his achievements in empowering the youth and the community at large, including giving tools that can help promote the skills each person has learnt.
