- A Yoruba group has warned Federal Government (FG) over the continuous detention of Sunday Igboho.
EKOHOTBLOG reports that a diaspora pro-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Oodua Worldwide, has cautioned the Federal Government (FG) to avert a looming danger by ensuring the freedom of popular Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo fondly known as Sunday Igboho, and his detained aides.
The Oodua Worldwide, a Canadian-based organisation, gave the warning via a statement titled, ‘Oodua Worldwide Calls For Igboho, Others Immediate Release’, on Thursday.
Igboho, EKOHOTBLOG reports, is currently in detention in the Benin Republic while four of his aides are in the detention of the Department of State Services (DSS).
It would be recalled that the DSS had raided Igboho’s Ibadan residence in the Soka area on July 1, 2021, arrested about 12 of his aides, and killed two of them in a gun battle.
Sunday Igboho, who gained prominence following an ultimatum he issued to criminal herdsmen in the South-West, was later arrested alongside his wife on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.
The Yoruba rights activist, who is now seeking asylum in the Francophone West African nation, is facing allegations bordering on trafficking in arms, inciting violence, and causing disunity in Nigeria.
However, the President of the Oodua Worldwide, Prince Adewale Julius Ojo, while reacting to the detention of the rights activist, enjoined traditional rulers and leaders in Yorubaland not to relent on efforts to ensure the freedom of Sunday Igboho, adding that the Nigerian government blundered by the “crude invasion and should fast track the release of Igboho and his four aides, still in detention”.

Ojo further stated that “prompt and unconditional release of Igboho is what can give a credible and unbiased face to a government that is now being seen by many as one with a mission to subdue other nations in Nigeria to favour one.”
He said, “We are making this urgent demand that Igboho and his remaining aides in detention should be released immediately to avert a looming danger hovering around Nigeria if swift, urgent steps are not taken on the right track. We still can’t reconcile why known national tormentors, walk the streets of Nigeria unmolested while those on a popular struggle suddenly became objects of intimidation by our government
“We are appalled that the nation is fast degenerating and no one seems to care about what would become of a once fledgling country which seems to have lost its soul to petty politicking by those ordained to guide it to fruition.
“We maintain that the only way peace and tranquility can reign in Nigeria is for government to restore hope that a new Nigeria is still a possibility. Anything to the contrary will pose a serious danger to the unity of our country, Nigeria,” the President of the Oodua Worldwide stated.
