Yoruba, Hausa Teachers Wanted In United States

The US Embassy & Consulate in Nigeria has announced job openings for Hausa and Yoruba teachers in the United States.

The embassy asked qualified graduates to apply for its Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTA) to tutor American students in Hausa and Yoruba.

The development is contained in a statement on the embassy’s website.

According to the statement, application process for the programme is to run from February 1 to June 1.

The statement added that the programme is opened to applicants with degrees in English, Education, Hausa, Yoruba, and Linguistics.

“The FLTA program is designed to offer young foreign teachers an opportunity to teach the Yoruba language and culture to American students in universities and colleges,” the mission’s public affairs section wrote.

“The program also gives an opportunity for participants to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States.

“Becoming a participant carries with it a great responsibility. Along with their studies, participants teach language courses, supervise language labs and lead language table discussions.

“They may act as resource persons in conversation groups, cultural representatives, attendants in language labs, coordinators of extra-curricular activities, guest speakers in civilization courses, and head of language clubs.”

It is gathered that the chosen applicants would be receiving a grant that will cover their round trip airfare to the US, a housing and settling-in allowance, monthly stipend, health insurance, and a scholarship for their coursework.

Provisions will also be made for the participants to attend the Fulbright FLTA Summer Orientation in the US.
