The communique was issued and signed by Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, along with eight traditional rulers during a Yoruba Security Summit held at Ife Grand Resort in Ile-Ife on Thursday. The summit, convened by the Ooni of Ife, saw the presence of Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun and various traditional rulers from Yoruba land.
Present at the event were the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III; Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo; Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade; Owa-Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Adewole; and Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi.
The summit observed that backing the president, including figures like Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola, Olojudo of Ido-Faboro, Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro, Alayemore of Ido-Osun, Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Akure of Ikire-Ile, among others, would be beneficial for the Yoruba race and Nigeria, fostering development.
Furthermore, the summit condemned organized systematic assaults on traditional rulers and prominent individuals from Yoruba land by suspected herders.
The resolution emphasizes the need for the Yoruba people to assert control over their forests, homelands, and farmlands, attributing the scarcity of food in the South-West largely to attacks by herdsmen.
“That the Yoruba, especially the traditional rulers should make recourse to their natural resources including natural powers to combat banditry and kidnapping; that Yoruba Obas should not jettison traditional values.
“That government at all levels should recognize the roles of traditional rulers and factor them into the national security architecture.
“That the entire Obas in Yorubaland should work in unison to ward off the evils of banditry and kidnappings as each of the states could only succeed in chasing the marauders to another state.
“That any Oba who is disinterested in Yoruba culture and customs should abdicate his throne for anyone who is deeply versed and interested in Yoruba tradition,” the communique said.
The also summit emphasized the need to enhance the Amotekun Corps through increased motivation, financial support, personnel training, retraining, and equipment upgrades.
