The traditional rulers urged Tinubu to establish “clear constitutional roles for traditional rulers as the fourth tier of government, replacing the existing local government authorities with local councils under the jurisdiction of traditional rulers.”
They also requested that a significant portion, at least 50 percent, of the security votes be allocated to traditional rulers to effectively collaborate with traditional, native, and other government security agencies in ensuring the security of each domain.
Additionally, the forum called for the devolution of more powers to local government areas under the supervision of traditional rulers.
They emphasized the importance of government support for agriculture in rural areas, both for local consumption and export purposes.
They advocated for diversifying the economy away from crude oil dependence, with a specific focus on agriculture.
Furthermore, they highlighted the need to promote tourism and emphasized that mining activities should be carried out through partnerships between the government and traditional rulers.
The Yoruba Obas Forum also advocated for the reintroduction of customary/native courts, presided over by traditional rulers, with jurisdiction over land, domestic, and similar matters. They emphasized the importance of recognizing and documenting judgments from these courts by the government.
Regarding the power sector, the traditional rulers urged the administration to prioritize addressing challenges that hinder regular power supply. They encouraged the consideration of regional and sub-regional power generation, distribution, and transmission to alleviate the situation.
