Popular Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN) has advised the federal government concerning the need to license the Amotekun security outfit in the Southwestern part of Nigeria to bear firearms.

Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Operation Amotekun, is a security outfit based in all the six states of the South Western, Nigeria.

Amotekun security corps was founded on the 9th of January 2020

Speaking during the interview, Falana argued that since private citizens were allowed to apply for the license to bear firearms for self-defense, the officers of the said security should be accorded the same right, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.

“if an individual can apply for licence to bear arms to defend himself and his family members, it is illegal not to give licenses to about 5,000 or 10,000 young men and women to protect a state like Lagos of about 20 million” he said.

Falana advised the governors in the southwest to take the matter to court if need be. He added that the criminal elements which Amotekun is charged with confronting carry fire arms such as “AK-47 and rounds of ammunition”.

Speaking further, Falana stated that when an organization such as Amotekun is set up without arms and ammunitions,

“You are either risking the lives of the men and women in that organisation or you are giving people a false sense of security.”
