Ishaq Oloyede, Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) registrar; has downplayed the significance of university education, saying it’s not the holygrail in the pursuit of success in life.

Oloyede spoke on Wednesday when he featured  on the latest episode of ‘Public Eye’, a talk show that’s hosted by Nigerian Media Personality, Funmi Iyanda.

The latest episode of the show centres around merit and demerits of university education and the relevance of university education as a whole.

Responding to question on the necessity or otherwise of university education in Nigeria, Oloyede said it was not a must for everyone to get university education, adding that many young people went to university but the education they got did not shape their lives positively.

“Should all of us go to the university? The answer to me is no. These children will go to the university and end up not benefiting from university education but they could do some other things, they could be better not going to the university”

He also opined that the system in Nigeria is flawed and hinders growth, drawing comparisons with what is practised in the UK, Oloyede said one does not need a degree in the UK to earn as much as those who have a degree, adding that a plumber earn as much as if not more than a university professor.

“The system itself needs to be addressed. In UK today, if one is a plumber, he could earn as much as somebody who is a professor if not more. He is fulfilled, he doesn’t need to be what he’s not because the system allows him to grow within his own path.”

JAMB is a federal government agency, a statutory body, saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the admission of worthy students into tertiary institutions across the country.
