Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed hope for a meeting with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during his upcoming visit to the United States.
The visit, set for next week, is part of Zelenskiy’s broader mission to present Ukraine’s “victory plan” aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia.
Zelenskiy is scheduled to attend sessions at both the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly.
He will also hold separate meetings with U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on September 26. Speaking to the media late Friday, Zelenskiy indicated that a meeting with Trump is likely during the visit, saying, “We will most likely have a meeting, I think, on September 26-27,” though he did not provide additional details.
This potential meeting would mark the first in-person encounter between Trump and Zelenskiy since Trump’s presidency, which ended in 2021. The two leaders last spoke by phone in July.
EDITORS PICK:
Zelenskiy’s visit comes at a critical time in the conflict with Russia. The Ukrainian leader plans to present his “victory plan” not only to Biden and Harris but also to Trump.
This plan, described by Zelenskiy as a diplomatic strategy to end the war, hinges on rapid decisions by Ukraine’s key allies from October to December this year.
In his push for increased support, Zelenskiy is expected to advocate for more weapons and enhanced military, economic, and diplomatic assistance from the United States, Ukraine’s key ally.
He may also seek the removal of U.S. restrictions on long-range missile strikes within Russia.
The visit occurs as Russian forces continue their slow but persistent advance in eastern Ukraine, despite a surprise Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region last month.
Zelenskiy has consistently emphasized the need for a ‘just peace,’ dismissing any possibility of freezing the conflict, which he argues would only delay further Russian aggression.
