Zelenskiy, Kishida Discuss Japan’s Energy Boost for Ukraine

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has announced on Tuesday that he had engaged in talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida regarding Japan’s energy assistance to Kyiv.

“Restoring our energy supply after Russian shelling and preparing for winter are tasks we are actively working on now,” Zelenskiy stated on Telegram.

“Together with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, we discussed the situation in the energy sector.”

EDITORS PICK:

Both leaders are currently in the United States to participate in sessions at the U.N. General Assembly, where Zelenskiy is also expected to outline his “victory plan” to U.S. leadership.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Japan has been a key supporter, contributing $4.5 billion in aid this year alone, as noted on the Japanese foreign ministry’s website.

Japan has supplied Kyiv with crucial equipment to aid in the restoration of Ukraine’s power system and to bolster its capacity for the upcoming winter, amidst ongoing Russian strikes on energy infrastructure.

According to a recent report by the International Energy Agency, Ukraine could face an electricity supply shortfall of about a third of expected peak demand due to these attacks and the expiration of a gas supply contract by the end of the year.
