El-Rufai, a close ally of former President Muhammadu Buhari, cited a misalignment of values with the current APC trajectory as the reason for his departure. He has since become a vocal critic of President Tinubu and called for a united opposition to unseat the incumbent in 2027.
Recent reports suggest that at least six ex-governors are allegedly involved in the coalition, posing a significant challenge to Tinubu’s reelection prospects
According to a highly credible source cited by The Punch, the following former governors are allegedly involved in the coalition seeking to unseat the APC and President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election:
ROTIMI AMAECHI
Amaechi, a former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation under former President Buhari, has been an influential figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He played a pivotal role in the formation of the APC, joining the party at its inception after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In the run-up to the 2023 presidential election, Amaechi contested for the APC presidential ticket, ultimately coming in second place. Since then, there have been speculations about his standing within the party.
EMEKA IHEDIOHA
Emeka Ihedioha, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Governor of Imo State, has been speculated to be part of a new coalition aiming to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu.
Ihedioha, who initially won the 2019 gubernatorial election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was later removed from office by a Supreme Court ruling that declared Hope Uzodimma of the APC as the rightful winner.
LIYEL IMOKE
Liye Imoke, former governor of Cross River State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been mentioned as a potential member of the coalition of opposition figures considering a move to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Imoke, known to be a loyalist of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, may be joining forces with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other notable politicians who are distancing themselves from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP has been grappling with an internal crisis since the 2023 elections, raising concerns over President Tinubu’s possible interference in party affairs. As the conflict intensifies, Imoke and other PDP members are seeking alternative political avenues that align with their values and aspirations.
AMINU TAMBUWAL
aminu tambuwal, the immediate past governor of Sokoto State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has been identified as one of the key figures reportedly forming a coalition to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 election.
A loyalist of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Tambuwal notably stepped down during the PDP presidential primary election to support Atiku’s candidacy in 2023.
Tambuwal’s commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been unwavering, as demonstrated by his instrumental role in the party’s pursuit of political power.
However, as the PDP experiences internal conflict and dissatisfaction, Tambuwal and other key figures are considering strategic alliances to contest the APC’s dominance in the upcoming election.
RAUF AREGBESOLA
Former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, have held closed-door meetings in Lagos, sparking further speculation about potential political alliances and realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape.
