NDLEA Intercepts ₦9bn Worth of Drugs, Arrests Multiple Suspects Across Nigeria

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted 13.298 million opioid pills, including Tramadol, Tramaking Quick Action, Tamol-X, Royal Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol, along with 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, at the Onne Port in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to a statement by NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the seized drugs have a street value of over ₦9.017 billion.

The opioids were discovered in three containers from India during a 100% joint examination of cargoes conducted with the Nigerian Customs and other port stakeholders on October 3 and 4, 2024.

In a related operation on October 3, NDLEA agents at the Tincan Seaport in Lagos intercepted 100 parcels of “Canadian Loud,” a potent strain of cannabis, weighing 50kg.

The illicit consignment, packed into 20 parcels and concealed in five jumbo bags, was hidden inside a container with four imported vehicles from Canada.

The drugs were traced to a warehouse in Ikorodu after the container had been cleared from the ESS Libra Bonded Terminal. A suspect, Abubakar Ibrahim, was arrested in connection with the discovery.

Additionally, NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, arrested a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, for importing a large consignment of “Canadian Loud.

” The arrest occurred during the inward clearance of passengers from a KLM flight on October 3, 2024. During a joint examination of her luggage, 74 parcels of synthetic cannabis weighing 35.2kg were found concealed in two of her bags.

In her statement, Adrienne revealed she was recruited online and offered 10,000 Canadian dollars to traffic the drugs into Nigeria, claiming financial need to fund her master’s degree in Canada.

In Taraba State, NDLEA officers intercepted a commercial bus on October 3, carrying large quantities of opioids, including Tramadol, Rohypnol, and codeine-based syrups, concealed in hidden compartments.

Two suspects, Pako Thomas and Emmanuel Anyigor, were arrested. In another operation on October 2, Chibuzor Okafor was arrested in Wukari with 80 blocks of cannabis weighing 38kg, hidden in bags of garri.

In Lagos, NDLEA arrested Bolanle Ajenifuja on October 4 in the Afo-Media area of Ojo, where 700 liters of “skuchies,” a local mixture of chapman and illicit drugs, were recovered.

The same day, three suspects—Ezekiel Akpele, Elijah Michael, and Goddard John—were arrested during a raid on two cannabis farms located at Bridge Camp, a border community between Edo and Ondo states. Over 9,966kg of cannabis plants were destroyed on more than three hectares of farmland, with an additional 48kg of processed psychoactive substances recovered.
