He praised Nigerians for their resilience and civic maturity despite prevailing economic and security challenges, while reaffirming the commitment of the National Assembly to protecting democratic stability and promoting accountable governance.
“As we enter the year 2026, I extend my warm wishes to Nigerians for a peaceful and fulfilling year. I commend the resilience, patience and civic maturity of our people, even in challenging times,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President noted that while the Executive arm continues to implement government policies, the National Assembly remains committed to its constitutional roles of lawmaking, representation and oversight to ensure governance outcomes reflect the aspirations of Nigerians.

According to him, the Senate will continue to provide legislative backing where necessary, exercise oversight when required and act in the interest of national unity, economic stability and social justice.
Akpabio expressed cautious optimism that efforts aimed at tackling insecurity, economic hardship, infrastructure gaps and youth unemployment would yield more visible results in 2026. He stressed that sustainable development can only be achieved through strong and functional institutions rather than reliance on individual personalities.
“Our democracy is strengthened when institutions function effectively and leaders are held accountable. The National Assembly will continue to strengthen these institutions and ensure that public policies are people-centred and forward-looking,” he stated.
As the nation gradually approaches the 2027 general elections, Akpabio warned against divisive politics and false messianic narratives capable of undermining national cohesion. He cautioned that individuals who present themselves as sole saviours often worsen divisions rather than solve national problems.
He urged political actors to exercise restraint and act with a deep sense of national responsibility, assuring Nigerians that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline and the rule of law.
Akpabio also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to constructive engagement with the Executive, the Judiciary and other stakeholders in the quest for a more united, just and prosperous Nigeria.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain hopeful, vigilant and actively involved in democratic processes, while wishing citizens a peaceful and prosperous 2026.
