68 Political Associates of Obaseki Secure Court Order Blocking Police Arrest
Sixty-eight political associates of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki have obtained an interim injunction from the Edo State High Court, preventing the Nigerian Police from arresting them in connection with a petition filed by the Acting State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July.
The group, which includes political appointees, local government chairmen, aides, and other allies of the former governor, filed the suit under case number B/266M/2024. The Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Force CID Abuja), and the Police Service Commission (PSC) are named as respondents in the case.
Represented by their counsel, Olayiwola Afolabi SAN, the applicants requested protection from arrest pending the resolution of the case. The court granted the request, issuing an interim injunction that restrains the police from taking any action against them based on the petition.
Justice A. T. Momodu, who issued the ruling, stated, “An order of interim injunction is hereby made restraining the respondents, whether by themselves, their officers, or any police officers acting under their instruction, from inviting, arresting, or detaining the applicants in any of the respondents’ offices concerning the petition written by the chairman of the APC (Edo State) dated 18/07/2024, pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion filed by the applicants to enforce their fundamental human rights.”
The court also ordered that the enrolled order be served along with the originating motion on the respondents.
