EKO HOT BLOG gathered that Women have different nutritional needs at different stages of life, but eating a varied diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein sources and healthy fats can help provide many of the nutrients the body needs.
Here are seven foods women should consider including regularly in a balanced diet.
1. Eggs
Eggs are a good source of high quality protein and contain several important nutrients, including vitamin B12, selenium and choline. They can also be particularly useful as part of meals for women who need adequate protein to support muscles and general body functions.
Eggs are also affordable and easy to include in breakfast, lunch or dinner.
2. Leafy green vegetables
Vegetables such as spinach, ugu, kale and other dark leafy greens are rich in nutrients including folate, vitamin K, vitamin C and magnesium.
They can also contribute to daily iron intake, although the body absorbs plant based iron less efficiently than iron from animal foods. Eating leafy greens alongside foods containing vitamin C can help improve the absorption of this type of iron.
3. Beans
Beans are an affordable source of plant protein, fibre, iron, folate and other nutrients. Regularly including beans in meals can help women meet their protein and fibre needs while supporting digestive health.
Beans can also be combined with rice, vegetables or whole grains to create a balanced meal.
4. Fatty fish
Fish such as sardines, salmon and mackerel provide protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fats are important for heart health and also play a role in normal brain function.
Fatty fish can be included in meals several times a week as part of a balanced diet.
5. Yoghurt
Yoghurt provides protein and calcium, nutrients that are important for maintaining strong bones and teeth. This becomes particularly important as women age because bone density can decline, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.
Plain or low sugar yoghurt can be paired with fruits, oats or nuts for a nutritious snack or breakfast.
6. Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds such as almonds, groundnuts, walnuts, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds provide healthy fats, protein, fibre and minerals such as magnesium.
Because they are energy dense, a small portion can provide a significant amount of nutrients. They can be added to oatmeal, yoghurt, salads or eaten as a snack.
7. Fruits
Fruits provide vitamins, minerals, fibre and other beneficial plant compounds. Options such as oranges, bananas, pawpaw, apples, watermelon and berries can help increase dietary variety while providing nutrients the body needs.
Eating different types of fruit is generally better than relying on only one variety because different fruits provide different nutrients.
No single food can provide all the nutrients women need. The best approach is to eat a variety of foods across different food groups, while limiting excessive intake of foods high in added sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.

Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a medical condition or experiencing symptoms such as persistent fatigue should speak with a qualified healthcare professional or registered dietitian about their individual nutritional needs.
