EKO HOT BLOG reports that some habits may seem harmless, but doing them immediately after waking up can make it harder for your body and mind to transition from sleep to wakefulness.
Here are seven things you should avoid doing immediately after waking up.
1. Do Not Reach for Your Phone Immediately
For many people, the first thing they do after opening their eyes is check their phone. They scroll through social media, respond to messages or jump straight into the day’s news.
This can immediately expose your brain to a flood of information and potentially increase stress before your day has even started. Give yourself a few minutes to wake up before checking your notifications.
2. Do Not Jump Out of Bed Too Quickly
Getting up suddenly after lying down for several hours can make some people feel dizzy or lightheaded, particularly those who are prone to a drop in blood pressure when standing.
Instead, sit up slowly, take a moment and then stand. This gives your body time to adjust to the change in position.
3. Do Not Skip Hydration
Your body loses water while you sleep through breathing and sweating. Starting the morning without drinking any fluids can contribute to dehydration, especially if you were already dehydrated before going to bed.
Having a glass of water after waking up is a simple way to begin replenishing your fluids.
4. Do Not Start Your Day With a Cigarette
Smoking immediately after waking up is not a healthy way to begin your day. Nicotine is addictive, and smoking exposes the body to harmful chemicals that increase the risk of serious health problems.
If you smoke, delaying your first cigarette does not make smoking safe, but avoiding cigarettes altogether is the healthier choice.
5. Do Not Drink Too Much Caffeine on an Empty Stomach
Many people rely on coffee to feel awake in the morning. While moderate caffeine consumption can be part of a healthy diet for many adults, large amounts may cause problems such as anxiety, stomach discomfort or a racing heartbeat in some people.
If caffeine affects your stomach or makes you feel anxious, consider having it with or after breakfast instead of consuming a large amount immediately after waking.
6. Do Not Ignore the Urge to Use the Toilet
If you wake up needing to urinate, repeatedly holding it in is not a good habit. Your kidneys continue producing urine while you sleep, which is why many people need to use the bathroom soon after waking.
Listen to your body’s signals and use the toilet when you need to.
7. Do Not Start the Day in Complete Darkness
Opening your curtains or getting some natural light after waking can help your body recognise that it is time to be awake. Morning light is an important signal for regulating the body’s circadian rhythm, which influences sleep and wakefulness.
Instead of staying in a dark room while scrolling through your phone, open the curtains or spend a few minutes outside if possible.

A healthy morning routine does not have to be complicated. Drinking water, getting some natural light, moving slowly and giving yourself time to fully wake up can help you start the day more comfortably.
The goal is not to create a perfect morning routine but to avoid habits that may negatively affect your health, sleep or mental wellbeing.
