70 Dead, Dozens Injured in Niger Tanker Explosion

At least 70 people have lost their lives in a tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident occurred on Saturday when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned, prompting residents to attempt scooping fuel before the explosion.

Eyewitnesses report that the explosion left many victims burned beyond recognition, plunging the community into mourning.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the death toll to Channels Television. He also disclosed that 25 injured victims were rushed to hospitals in Suleja, Wuse, and other nearby facilities for urgent medical attention.

Following the tragic incident, Governor Umaru Bago visited the scene and directed that vehicles from the Maje axis should not be allowed to pass through the Dikko Bridge. Instead, they are to use alternate routes for safety.

Governor Bago criticized the recklessness of certain drivers, emphasizing the need for stricter road safety measures. He called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to establish a permanent detachment in the area to enforce these directives.

In his address, the Governor described the incident as a “pathetic and avoidable tragedy” and thanked God that the fire did not extend to nearby communities.

Governor Bago also urged the Federal Government to expedite the completion of the Minna-Suleja road project, noting that the delay has contributed to repeated accidents and loss of lives.

He expressed gratitude to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, Road Safety Corps, and other responders who assisted in evacuating victims and managing the aftermath of the explosion.

Additionally, Governor Bago announced plans to redeploy doctors from Minna hospitals to Suleja General Hospital to assist in treating the injured victims.
