Telcos, Others Get NIMC Nod To Provide NIN
National Identity Management Commission, (NIMC) says it has licensed Telecommunications companies to register people who are yet to have National Identity Numbers
Director-General, NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, who announced the development, said some other private and public organisations had also been given approval to provide NINs.
Aziz said the move became imperative in order to address the issue of crowd and flagrant violation of the COVID-19 protocol at the commission’s offices.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had constituted a committee to address the grievances of NIMC employees, a source at the commission also disclosed that on Tuesday.
Recall that NIMC staff embarked on Industrial action on January 7, 2021 in protest against the poor condition of service and welfare issues at the commission, but their strike was called off after the intervention of the minister.
Responding to an question on measures taken by NIMC with respect to complains by citizens and the crowds at the commission’s offices, Aziz said mobile network operators had been designated to also give the identity numbers.
“We have licensed private and public sector organisations including telcos (telecommunications companies) so as to create more centres,” Aziz told PUNCH.
