Eko Hot Blog reports that in a concerted effort to fortify its mission of creating a safer and sustainable environment, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) conducted a one-day capacity-building training for accredited environmental consultants across the state.

EDITOR’S PICK:

The training, held at the STO Resource Centre in Ikeja on Tuesday, aimed to update the consultants on the latest trends in addressing global climate change challenges and other environmental issues crucial for sustainable development.

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, emphasized the importance of supporting the State Government’s commitment to delivering a safer, healthier, and sustainable environment.

He urged participants to embrace the Environment Social Governance (ESG) global model, highlighting its significance in effectively tackling contemporary environmental challenges worldwide.

Dr. Ajayi emphasized that the adoption of the ESG model aligns with global best practices in managing environmental issues, particularly the pressing problem of climate change and its associated greenhouse gas emissions.

The training was deemed essential to ensure that LASEPA-accredited consultants are well-versed in the application of this global standard model.

The General Manager underlined that the program also serves the broader goal of enhancing awareness, knowledge transfer, and competence development among the Agency’s accredited consultants.

This, in turn, is expected to elevate public service delivery by LASEPA.

Dr. Ajayi revealed that in the last three months, the Agency, under his administration, has sealed approximately 250 organizations, including industries, nightclubs, and places of worship, for various environmental infractions, with a particular focus on noise pollution.

He emphasized that ongoing reforms are geared towards achieving a cleaner, safer, and pollution-free Lagos.

Mr. James Ogunleye, Executive Director of Carbon Limits Nigeria, speaking on behalf of other facilitators, emphasized the importance of the training program.

He stated, “The issue of climate change, global warming effects, and other environmental challenges mandates that environmental consultants are well-informed and equipped with updated knowledge to apply appropriate solutions.”

Ogunleye added, “The training has provided a window of opportunity for accredited consultants to update their knowledge and become acquainted with current trends in global best practices for a sustainable environment.”
