Cyriel Dessers Opens Up About His Unconventional Journey To The Top
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a candid interview, Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers reflected on his remarkable path to becoming a professional footballer, revealing that he was never considered a “big, big talent” in his early years.
Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Dessers’ unwavering determination and resilience have propelled him to the pinnacle of the game, where he now finds himself representing the prestigious Rangers Football Club.

“I was never regarded as a big, big talent – this path actually made me stronger and made me who I am now,” Dessers admitted. “It is not a sprint, it is a marathon, and I think my career is one of the best examples of that.”
The 29-year-old striker’s journey to professional football was unconventional, as he turned pro relatively late and spent the early stages of his career at mid-table clubs in the Netherlands and Belgium. It wasn’t until his move to Genk in 2020 and a successful loan spell at Feyenoord, where he became the top scorer in the Europa Conference League, that Dessers started to attract major attention.
Reflecting on his arduous journey, Dessers expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has been granted, stating, “I became a pro football player quite late. I saw the other side of life that is why I try to enjoy the special moments in football even more. The things you can do, the places you can see, it obviously makes it special.”
Former coach Joseph Bijloos echoed Dessers’ sentiments, saying, “Cyriel’s journey has been challenging because he’s always been underestimated. His talents didn’t always receive the praise they deserved. Despite all the setbacks, he’s always managed to bounce back. That’s very typical of his character.”
Dessers, who recently experienced the thrill of playing in a European final with Rangers, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating with a smile, “There are so many good football players in the world, but how many can say they played in a European final?”
