South East Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Efforts to release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu have intensified, with traditional rulers and archbishops visiting him under the auspices of South East governors negotiating his release with the Federal Government.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the effort to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has intensified recently, marked by a visit from traditional rulers and archbishops of South East extraction to his detention facility.

Speaking on Friday, Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimako, revealed that the visit, which was kept secret, was initiated by the region’s governors. These governors have been in talks with the Federal Government to facilitate Kanu’s release.

Ejimako stated that the meeting aimed to persuade the detained Biafran agitator to accept the stringent conditions set by the Federal Government for his release.

He added that the emissaries are expected to meet with state governors of the region to discuss the details of their meeting with Kanu in the coming days. Subsequently, the governors are anticipated to meet with President Bola Tinubu to present Kanu’s stance as conveyed by the emissaries, with the hope of reaching an agreement for his release.

Ejimako noted, “With particular reference to the intervention of South-East governors, myself and three high delegates from the Joint Body of Southeast Archbishops and Traditional Rulers met with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu yesterday at the DSS for over two hours.”

“The delegation comprised of Archbishop Chibuzor Opoko, Archbishop David Onuoha, and Dr Uju Agomoh. The meeting was highly fruitful because it’s this body that is interfacing with SE governors on the matter of freeing Kanu and other issues pertinent to it.

“So, sequel to this meeting, the body, which is headed by His Royal Majesty, Dr Nnaemeka Achebe (Obi of Onitsha) will revert to South East governors with what Nnamdi Kanu had said to them. It’s from that point that a meeting between President Tinubu and South East governors is expected to materialise.”

Ejimako explained that his public crusade against the continued detention and trial of Kanu was driven by the standing judicial pronouncements and legal principles against his rendition, detention, and trial.
