Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a stark warning, stating that the abduction of Nigerians by bandits will continue unless the government and security agencies take decisive action against insecurity.

Obi made these remarks while reacting to the recent release of 8 corps members by bandits in Zamfara State and the police rescue of 19 medical students and a medical doctor kidnapped by bandits in Benue State.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Obi praised the security forces for their successful operations but emphasized the need for a more proactive approach in tackling insecurity across the country.

He acknowledged the efforts of the combined team of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the military, in rescuing the victims and commended their dedication and sacrifices.

“The two media reports showing the rescue of the 20 medical students who were kidnapped in Benue State and the release of 8 National Youth Corps members by their captors are relieving and gladdening,” Obi said.

“The NYSC members were kidnapped in Zamfara on August 17 while traveling from Uyo in Akwa Ibom State to Sokoto State. I thank the combined team of security agencies—the Nigeria Police Force, the DSS, the military personnel, and everyone who contributed to the rescue of our children from captivity. I commend them for their gallant efforts and sacrifices.”

The former Anambra State governor stressed that, beyond the immediate rescue of kidnap victims, it is crucial to implement measures that prevent such criminal activities from recurring.

He called on the government and security agencies to intensify their efforts in ensuring the security of lives and property across the nation.

“Beyond rescuing kidnap victims, I encourage the government and our security agents to be more proactive in preventing these criminal activities from occurring in the future and in ensuring that those behind these nefarious acts are brought to book.

“Until we fully declare war on insecurity in our nation, such ugly stories will continue to define our national existence,” Obi asserted.

He further highlighted the urgency of the situation by referencing recent attacks, including the killing of 13 farmers by bandits in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State and the abduction of about 10 people during an attack on Moriki Community in Zamfara State.

Obi lamented that many criminal activities go unreported in various parts of the country, underscoring the need for a comprehensive and sustained effort to address the insecurity crisis.

“Insecurity must stop. Those behind insecurity in Nigeria must be stopped. Our nation must move forward. The government and our security agents must now take the lead in protecting the lives and properties of our people from these criminal elements,” Obi added.
