Labour Party: No Automatic 2027 Presidential Ticket For Peter Obi – Abure
The embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has announced that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket will no longer be automatically reserved for Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential candidate.
Abure revealed this during a press briefing following the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday. He stated that the LP’s presidential ticket is now open to all eligible members.
Abure emphasized, “NEC in session reviewed the decision of the National Convention to reserve its Presidential and Governorship tickets for Peter Gregory Obi and Alex Otti, respectively.

In addition, Abure clarified that there would be no automatic second-term ticket for Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, stating that other aspirants within the party will also have a fair chance to contest for the governorship in 2027.
Addressing internal party disputes, Abure criticized a recent stakeholders’ meeting convened by Governor Otti, calling it unconstitutional.
He noted that under Article 14 (4) (B) of the Labour Party Constitution, only the National Secretary, with the approval of the National Chairman, has the authority to call such meetings.
Abure further criticized the meeting for violating Section 82 (1) and (2) (a) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates political parties to give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at least 21 days’ notice for any significant meetings or conventions.

Abure underscored that no party governor, including Otti, could intimidate or dissolve the National Working Committee (NWC), state councils, or local government councils.
He remarked, “No governor, no matter how highly placed, can come with a fiat to dissolve the NWC or state and local councils. The mandate given to me and my team during the March 27, 2024, convention will be defended.”

He also condemned recent events aimed at creating division within the Labour Party, specifically calling out Obi and Otti for holding what he described as an “illegal gathering” in Abia State to install a “new leadership” without the approval of the NEC.
Abure labeled the move as a betrayal of the party’s unity and values, adding, “This was a reward for loyalty with ingratitude, a reward for support with insubordination.”
