NAFDAC Orders Recall of Dove Beauty Soap Over Harmful Chemical
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a recall for Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g) with batch number 81832M 08, manufactured in Germany, due to the presence of a harmful chemical impurity.
NAFDAC announced that the product violates the Cosmetic Products Regulation by containing Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), also known as Lilial, a chemical linked to serious health risks.
According to the agency, BMHCA has been banned in cosmetic products because it poses a threat to reproductive health and can potentially harm unborn children. It has also been associated with skin sensitization and allergic reactions in some users.

In a statement published on its website on Monday, NAFDAC explained, “The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is alerting the public about the recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g) with batch number 81832M 08, produced in Germany, due to chemical impurity.”
“The product contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), which is prohibited due to its reproductive harm, potential danger to unborn children, and risk of causing skin sensitization. Several regulatory bodies in the EU have already banned its marketing.”
In addition to the Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap, other Dove cosmetic products recalled or banned in various countries due to BMHCA include Derma Spa Goodness, Men Care, Men Care+ Sensitive Shield, Natural Touch, Nourishing Body Care Light Hydro, Pampering Body Lotion, Go Fresh, Talco con Crema, Go Fresh Pera, Extra Fresh, Goodness3 Skincare Ritual, Invisible Dry Antiperspirant Spray, Go Fresh Revitalize Nourishing Shower Gel, Caring Hand Wash, and Invisible Dry.

NAFDAC noted that these products are not listed in its database and urged the public to remain cautious. The agency warned importers, distributors, and retailers to avoid importing, distributing, or selling the affected products.
The statement read, “Importation of soaps is prohibited in Nigeria under the restricted and import prohibition list. Beyond import restrictions, soaps and cosmetics are also ineligible for foreign exchange for importation into Nigeria. These products are not listed in the NAFDAC database. Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers should exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to prevent the distribution or sale of these products. Those in possession of the affected items are advised to discontinue their use and submit any stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.”
NAFDAC also urged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse reactions experienced from using regulated products. Reports can be submitted through the nearest NAFDAC office, by email at [email protected], through e-reporting platforms available at www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-Safety app, available on Android and iOS stores.
