Tinubu Signs Bill to Establish National Center for Small Arms Control

President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill establishing the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons.

This move, announced by National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu during a workshop on Gender Mainstreaming in Preventing the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Abuja, states the President’s commitment to addressing the spread of illegal arms.

Represented by Amb. Ibrahim Babani, Director of External Affairs at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Ribadu stated that the bill’s passage will enhance the Centre’s capacity for coordinated and decisive action.

Ribadu stressed that the workshop was a testament to the collective effort needed to tackle the proliferation of dangerous weapons, which impact women and children, particularly in conflict zones.

“Moreover, the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons underscores the collective responsibility of our region in curbing the spread of these dangerous weapons, which disproportionately affect women and children in conflict zones.
