A spectacular first-half goal from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd secured all three points for Chelsea. The Swedish winger cut inside and delivered a flawless shot into the far corner, leaving Villa’s defence helpless.

However, Chelsea faced a tense finale. In stoppage time, goalkeeper Hannah Hampton produced two crucial saves to preserve the win, first stretching to block a powerful header from Rachel Daly, then tipping Villa keeper Sabrina D’Angelo’s shot over the bar in dramatic fashion.
The thrilling conclusion to the WSL opener heralded Bompastor’s arrival and signalled the beginning of a new chapter at Chelsea. The reigning champions are chasing their sixth consecutive WSL title but are embarking on this campaign without their long-time manager, Emma Hayes.
At Kingsmeadow, banners celebrated Bompastor’s “revolution,” and her influence was evident in the line-up, which included several new faces. Among them was England defender Lucy Bronze, making her debut.
The match also marked the first WSL appearance for Aston Villa’s new manager, Robert de Pauw. His team showed plenty of potential, particularly early on when debutant Missy Bo Kearns squandered a golden chance, sending a cross from Chasity Grant over the bar. Throughout the second half, Chelsea’s Hampton had to stay sharp to keep Villa at bay.

Ultimately, Chelsea’s class prevailed, with Kaneryd’s brilliant strike ensuring a perfect start to Bompastor’s tenure.
“Today maybe we should have been more efficient and that would change the game. Winning is important for sure,” said Bompastor afterwards.
“We still have to work on some bits. I’m just happy with the three points, it’s always good to start with a win.”
