EFL Cup: Leicester Edge Past Walsall On Penalties

Published

Leicester City narrowly advanced to the Carabao Cup fourth round, edging out League Two side Walsall on penalties after a hard-fought 0-0 draw.

Despite Walsall creating the better chances during regular time, with Charlie Lakin and Albert Adomah missing key opportunities, Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward emerged as the hero.

He saved three penalties in the shootout, allowing the Foxes to scrape through after a challenging night.

Manager Steve Cooper made 10 changes to his squad, leaving out stars like Jamie Vardy, Stephy Mavididi, Harry Winks, and Wilfred Ndidi.

The revamped lineup struggled to find cohesion, with the game’s brightest moments coming from Abdul Fatawu’s dribbling in the second half, though his efforts resulted in two wayward shots and a header saved by Walsall keeper Tommy Simkin.

Walsall, third in League Two and unbeaten at home, had already won two penalty shootouts this season. However, this time, Ward stole the show, saving spot-kicks from Taylor Allen, David Okagbue, and Liam Gordon.

Ricardo Pereira, Conor Coady, and Oliver Skipp converted their penalties for Leicester, securing their place in the next round.

A touching tribute occurred on the hour mark, as both sets of fans honoured Craig Shakespeare, a well-respected figure at both clubs, with a minute’s applause.

Shakespeare, who passed away in August at the age of 60, had played for Walsall and was part of their 1984 League Cup semi-final squad before later coaching Leicester to their historic Premier League title in 2016.
