Japa: Nigerians Should Put Country Above Financial Gains – Akpabio
He made the remarks on the Senate floor on Tuesday while addressing a motion aimed at curbing the mass migration of skilled Nigerians abroad.
Akpabio stressed that the country would benefit more if professionals in various fields chose to stay in Nigeria rather than seek opportunities abroad. “The country is losing its expertise. If those who acquired skills returned to Nigeria, it would be better,” he said.

He attributed the exodus of talent to poor working conditions but emphasized that patriotism should come first. “I believe people should place love for their country above financial gains. That is why many of us choose to remain here,” Akpabio added.
Highlighting the impact of migration, particularly in the health sector, Akpabio said, “The brain drain is a significant issue, especially in the health sector. It’s affecting us deeply. Reports suggest there are nearly 22,000 Nigerian health professionals excelling in the U.S.”

He also noted the strain on the education sector, where many departments struggle with less than 50% of their required staff. “What are we teaching our children under such conditions? It’s like a computer—garbage in, garbage out,” he said.
Akpabio assured that the National Assembly would continue to work towards improving conditions for teachers to encourage them to stay in the country and contribute to the education of future generations.
