The Nigerian Senate, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, entered a closed-door session today following a motion on a matter of privilege raised by Deputy Senate Leader, Oyelola Ashiru.

The motion, citing Orders 9, 10, 41, and 52 of the Senate Standing Rules, was of urgent national importance.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ashiru explained that Order 9 refers to privileges enjoyed by the Senate collectively and its members individually, stating that matters of privilege must be addressed immediately.

He also cited Order 10, which allows any senator to raise a matter of privilege and move a motion without notice.

Before Ashiru could elaborate, Senate President Akpabio interrupted, asking Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to proceed with a motion for an executive session.

Bamidele, addressing the chamber, moved for the Senate to dissolve into a closed session to discuss sensitive matters.

Senate Minority Whip Osita Ngwu seconded the motion, leading to the Senate’s resolution to discuss matters privately before reconvening.

While Ashiru did not reveal the specifics of the issue of privilege, recent tensions between the senator and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) are believed to be involved.

Last week, during a debate on a bill to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation, Ashiru criticized the NDLEA, calling it corrupt.

The agency, in turn, accused Ashiru of harboring a personal vendetta due to a past incident involving drug arrests at his residence.

Ashiru’s office has denied the allegations, challenging the NDLEA to bring any culprits to court, stating that the senator has consistently called out corruption in the agency.

The Senate is expected to reconvene after the executive session.
