Why Speed Darlington Was Re-Arrested in Owerri – Lawyer

Stan Alieke, legal counsel to controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, has confirmed that the artist was re-arrested in Owerri, Imo State, on allegations of bail jumping.

Darlington’s initial arrest occurred in October, following a petition by fellow musician Burna Boy. According to Naija News, he was granted administrative bail after being detained for five days.

In a statement released Wednesday, Alieke clarified that Darlington missed a scheduled court appearance due to a medical emergency requiring treatment abroad.

The lawyer emphasized that his client had no intention of evading legal obligations and had planned to return to Abuja after performing in Owerri.

“Following our client’s performance in Owerri, he was picked up by the police over claims of jumping bail, reportedly on the orders of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau,” Alieke stated.

Alieke further explained: “On October 8, 2024, our client was granted administrative bail after five days of illegal detention linked to the Burna Boy matter. He was scheduled to report back but was unable to do so due to a medical emergency requiring international treatment.”

The lawyer described the police action as unwarranted, accusing authorities of attempting to embarrass Darlington and violate his rights. “This is a clear misuse of police power and serves no purpose other than to humiliate our client,” Alieke added.
