Senate Screens Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede Behind Closed Doors

The Senate on Wednesday held a closed-door screening session for the acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The exercise was conducted by the Senate Committee on the Army, led by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, in Room 211 of the Senate New Building.

The screening follows President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Oluyede for confirmation as Chief of Army Staff, as communicated in a letter to the Senate on Tuesday.

In his opening remarks, Yar’Adua underscored the National Assembly’s vital role in maintaining peace, order, and national security. He described the screening as part of the legislature’s responsibility to uphold constitutional principles and ensure good governance.

“This screening exercise demonstrates our commitment to upholding the laws of the Federation and strengthening national security,” Yar’Adua said.

He acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, and other criminal activities, commending the armed forces for their efforts. He noted that the session aimed to assess Oluyede’s professional competence, strategic vision, and plans to address these issues, with a particular focus on military funding and personnel welfare.

Due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, the committee opted for a closed-door session. Yar’Adua encouraged Oluyede to outline his vision for enhancing Nigeria’s security framework and the military’s capacity to manage both internal and external threats.

“The security of our nation is paramount, and this exercise offers an opportunity to shape a path forward under the nominee’s leadership,” Yar’Adua added.

The committee is expected to submit its report and recommendations to the Senate for further consideration.
