Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, disclosed that Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), issued threats against him for not endorsing the agitation for Biafra.
Speaking during an interview with Arise Television on Monday, Kalu recounted the threats and reaffirmed his commitment to national unity.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Simon Ekpa, a dual citizen of Finland and Nigeria, was arrested by Finnish police on November 21, 2024, and is currently imprisoned by the Päijät-Häme district court. He faces charges of spreading terrorist propaganda in 2021, allegedly inciting violence in Nigeria’s southeast.
The federal government is actively seeking his extradition, with the Finnish court setting a deadline of May 2025 for formal charges.
Kalu called on security agencies to prioritize intelligence-driven strategies to address crime, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.
“I am very strong-willed when it comes to security, and I can do anything to safeguard lives and property. Security is about intelligence, not roadblocks. Igbos must prioritize safety, and the federal government, along with state governors, must work towards this,” Kalu said.
The senator criticized the persistent activities of non-state actors and urged southeast governors to adopt a firm stance against crime. He also addressed the threats from Ekpa, stating:
“Simon Ekpa called and threatened me because I don’t support Biafra. But my conscience is clear; I am a democrat, an Igbo man at heart, and a firm believer in Nigeria’s unity.”
