The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has clarified that the Department of State Services (DSS) is not responsible for inspecting passengers’ bags at Nigerian airports.

Speaking on Arise News’ This Morning programme on Sunday, Keyamo outlined ongoing reforms to improve airport security processes and address congestion issues.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that using Lagos International Airport as an example, the minister explained that passengers’ bags are first screened upon entry and then examined at a joint inspection table, often leading to congestion and blockages.

To resolve this, the ministry has dismantled the joint inspection table, which previously hosted multiple agencies, including customs, DSS, NDLEA, and quarantine, conducting repetitive searches.

Keyamo emphasized that DSS officials are tasked with profiling travelers for security purposes and not physical bag checks. “DSS, you have no business searching people’s bags. Your role is to profile individuals under security scrutiny and collaborate with immigration officers at passport control,” he stated.

The minister noted that moving forward, aviation security staff will collaborate with other agencies at the screening machines to eliminate redundant procedures. Agencies such as NDLEA and customs are now expected to observe scanned items and privately conduct further checks only when necessary.

Criticizing previous practices, Keyamo said: “What is the point of having machines if agencies are still opening bags manually at congested tables? Suspicious items should be investigated in private screening rooms to avoid creating a nuisance for travelers.”

Addressing broader issues, Keyamo acknowledged the federal government’s recent measures aimed at reducing harassment and extortion by airport officials. He stressed that the reforms were designed not to eliminate these agencies but to ensure their operations align with global best practices.

“We recognize the need for security checks, but they must be efficient and free from corruption,” Keyamo remarked. “These adjustments aim to enhance the travel experience while maintaining stringent security protocols.”

The reforms signal the government’s commitment to streamlining airport processes, reducing delays, and improving Nigeria’s aviation standards.
