BREAKING: Telecom Companies Meet Communication Minister Over Proposed Tariff Hike

Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, today hosted an urgent meeting with representatives from Nigeria’s leading telecom companies to discuss their ongoing push for an increase in tariffs.

Present at the meeting earlier this morning were representatives from MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9Mobile.

Also, federal government officials, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), were also seen at the premises.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Telecom operators have been asking for an increase in telecom tariffs, blaming their request to the rising economic pressures in the country.

These include the removal of fuel subsidies and the fluctuating naira exchange rate, which have strained their operations and escalated costs. The companies argue that the existing tariff structures are no longer sustainable under these new economic realities.

However, the Federal government, through the NCC, responded negatively to their request, noting that telecom operators still have room to work within the existing framework of the 2013 tariff price floor. The government has cautioned against a hasty move to adjust tariffs, and asked telecom companies to explore other available options before considering a hike in prices.
