The hosts’ troubles deepened when Patrik Schick slid in to convert Piero Hincapie’s low cross in the seventh minute.
A brief glimmer of hope came for injury-hit Dortmund when England Under-21 winger Jamie Gittens netted his 10th goal of the season, deftly lifting the ball over Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky in the 11th minute after a defensive lapse.
However, Leverkusen quickly restored their two-goal cushion with Schick’s second of the night, finishing at the far post from Jeremie Frimpong’s low delivery.
Despite Dortmund’s dominance in possession—over 70%—and a late surge that saw Serhou Guirassy convert a penalty following Edmond Tapsoba’s handball after a VAR review, the home side fell short of a comeback.
