Hours after President Donald Trump announced the imposition of steep tariffs on Canada, hockey fans in Ottawa voiced their disapproval by booing the Star-Spangled Banner during a National Hockey League game between a visiting US team and the local squad.

The protest continued on Sunday, during a National Basketball Association game between the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Clippers, with the boos overwhelming the performance of a 15-year-old singer.

This vocal display from Canadian fans, usually known for their respect at sporting events, is a clear signal of the deep frustration many Canadians feel toward Trump’s decision to impose punitive taxes on their closest ally, a move that risks triggering an unprecedented trade war in North America.

Trump’s 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports to the US—along with a 10% levy on energy—are scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, adding to the growing tensions. At the same time, Trump has intensified his push for Canada to join the US as the 51st state, a proposal once dismissed as a joke but now gaining momentum.

While economists predict the tariffs will raise costs for American consumers on everyday goods, from gas to groceries, Canada stands to suffer more, especially if the trade dispute lasts for months. Prolonged tariffs could push Canada into a painful economic recession.

In response, anger is mounting in Canada, with political leaders rallying the public to take action.

“Many of us will face hardships, and I ask you to support each other through these tough times,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a Saturday evening address. “Now is the time to choose Canada.”

Canadians have already begun to heed this call for unity. Social media platforms have seen guides circulating on how to avoid American-made products. A grocery store in Toronto even began labelling its Canadian yogurt for shoppers, as shared by Toronto doctor Iris Gorfinkel on X.

Others have chosen to cancel travel plans to the US, including Seth Klein, a Canadian author, who posted on Bluesky: “Yesterday, in response to Trump tariffs, we cancelled our family March break to the US. Took a small hit on cancelled train tickets, but it needed to be done.”

Starting Tuesday, some provinces, including Ontario, will remove American alcohol from store shelves indefinitely, adding to Canada’s retaliation efforts.

In total, Canada has announced tariffs on up to C$155 billion ($105 billion; £86 billion) of US goods, including vegetables, clothing, sports equipment, perfume, and more. Items from Republican-led states—such as Florida orange juice—are being specifically targeted.

As Canada remains the top source of US oil imports, Trudeau’s government has warned that “all options remain on the table” for further retaliatory actions.
