The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has banned Nigerian Para powerlifter Kafilat Almaruf for three years for breaking anti-doping rules.

Almaruf tested positive for an illegal anabolic steroid during a urine test taken out of competition on July 11, 2024. The IPC suspended her temporarily on August 19, 2024, while investigating the case.

Special testing confirmed that the anabolic steroid found in her sample came from an external source and not her body. These steroids are banned at all times under the 2024 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules.

Almaruf admitted to the doping violation and agreed to the punishment. She is banned from competing or participating in sports activities (except for approved anti-doping education or rehabilitation programs) from August 19, 2024, to August 18, 2027.

Furthermore, all results she achieved between July 11, 2024, when her sample was collected, and August 19, 2024, when her provisional suspension began, have been disqualified. This includes the forfeiture of any medals, points, or prizes she earned during that period.

The IPC emphasized that athletes are strictly responsible for any banned substances found in their bodies. Whether the use of the prohibited substance was intentional, accidental, or due to negligence, the presence of such substances in an athlete’s sample constitutes an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV). This ruling.

Athletes are fully responsible for any banned substances found in their bodies, whether the substance was taken intentionally, accidentally, or due to carelessness.
